The parable of the publican and the pharisee found in Luke 18:9–14 serves as the inspiration for the song. The tenor solo is a reflection of the publican's pleas, as he beseeches God for forgiveness after realizing his own helplessness. With all his solemnity, he knew that the kingdom of God is not the place for arrogance or gracefulness of speech. This song is an appeal for humility and repentance.
