Why the small, still moments we often overlook are the true architects of our lives

Introduction
Focus often depends on the size of the space we occupy and the activities happening around us. Think about driving. Before pulling out of the garage, I always find myself deeply aware of what’s inside my vehicle.
This early moment — before hitting the highway — is often when my car receives its most careful attention. In that little space, with limited outside distractions, I feel focused and courageous.
The Power of Stillness
The same is true of restrooms. They are small, still spaces with immovable objects that patiently wait to serve their purpose. Perhaps it’s their stillness that makes them a temporary escape, a place where the mind detoxifies.
Countless stories exist of people who have found breakthrough ideas in the restroom — from songs to solutions to math problems. In these moments of stillness, the absence of external noise allows clarity and creativity to surface.
“Do not despise the little spaces of your life. Instead, invest in them. Add values that will sustain you when you are out on the highway of life.”
Investing in Little Spaces
But here’s the truth: a space will only deliver as much as we invest in it. In my travels, I’ve seen restrooms transformed — in hotels, businesses, and even public places — into spots of inspiration, not just necessity.
It’s like raising children. The time, presence, and intentionality a parent invests goes a long way in helping them see clearly and make wise choices for themselves and others.
The Garage Moment
That moment before driving out is the best time to pay attention to the inside of the car. Because once you’re on the road, focusing inward is dangerous. Nobody drives down the highway staring at the dashboard.
“Nobody drives down the highway staring at the dashboard. Your eyes must be outward — on the rearview mirror, the side mirrors, and the road ahead.”
Applying the Lesson to Life
External demands often take our focus away from the interior. Likewise, in life, we often start with focus and clarity, but external events can quickly disrupt our stillness.
It could be that your present little space is a low-paying job, an illness, a challenging course, a difficult task, a boss, spouse, colleague, neighbor, child, friend, relative, or even unemployment. Learn from these life challenges in your little space and let God heal you inward out, preparing you for the world. It is a moment of stillness — not stagnation — that affords you the time to look inward in connection with the Lord.
The Highway Ahead
No driver who desires to see the world remains in the garage. Life is accessed through the highways, which always lead to new destinations. And every destination, in its own way, is another space of preparation — for yet another highway ahead.
Pull-Quote Suggestion: “Every destination, in its own way, is another space of preparation — for yet another highway ahead.”
